How
long is the Heritage Trail?
The
current length is 1.4 miles. Approximately 3/4 miles from the hilltop down is
paved; the remainder to the bottom is gravel and grass.
What is the grade of the Millennium Hillside section?
The
grade, which varies from 6% to 10%, can be challenging for many users. South of
Crooked Creek, the grade is minimal.
Who can use the Heritage Trail?
The
Heritage Trail system was primarily designed for pedestrians. Motorized
vehicles are prohibited. Horses are also prohibited out of courtesy to walkers.
Who owns the Heritage Trail?
Most of
the Heritage Trail crosses land owned by the Madison State Hospital and the City
of Madison; this includes the right of way for the Madison Railroad. The
Heritage Trail Committee is negotiating to buy the one piece of the Trail which
is privately owned; the owner has graciously consented to allow the Trail to
continue over his land.
Where is the Trail located?
Walkers
may access the Trail at the top, at the southeast corner of the Madison State
Hospital, or at the bottom at the corner of Vernon and Vaughn Streets along the
riverfront. Limited parking is available at both top and bottom. Click here to

map

How can I help?
You can
invite your friends to walk the Trail with you. You may join the group by
sending in this
application.
You can volunteer to help with Trail maintenance by contacting Bob Greene at
317/696-0860 or
RobertRGreene@gmail.com.
You may send a donation to Heritage Trail, P.O. Box 362, Madison, Indiana
47250. Thank you!
What are your next plans?
Ultimately we hope to extend the Trail from the riverfront to Clifty Falls State
Park. We also hope to open an eastern section of the Trail up Hatcher Hill.
We’ll keep you posted.
