Welcome to the Heritage Trail of Madison web site. Purpose of this site is to keep you updated on trail progress.
The trail committee has been working on this project since the mid 90's. Our committee has had their ups and downs. Speaking of ups and downs, completed so far is the Millennium section. This one mile segment was the most difficult because it is the hillside portion that connects the hilltop to the downtown section of town. Many trail users have been using it. This section is the most challenging part. Grade level varies from 6% to 10%. Quite steep for most types of users. That is why the trail committee has been working very hard to complete the next phase. This phase includes connecting with Madison's Riverfront and connecting from Rucker's Sports Complex into Clifty Falls State Park. To see this new exciting segment click on map shown on the right.

New City Administration Takes Over...

Mayor Tim Armstrong      Past Mayor Al Huntington

About this time a year cities and towns around our country new administrations are changing. Our past relationship with Mayor Al Huntington and his administration has concluded. Today we have newly elected Tim Armstrong. Tim who has been a career city police officer before taking over the helm of mayor. Tim was born and raised in Madison. Besides being a city police officer he was also involved with local sports. Tim a graduate of Shawe Memorial High School later coached both the baseball and basketball programs at Shawe. In 2002 Tim carried the Shawe baseball team to State. Only falling short in the runner up's game. Later he coached the Madison Cubs baseball team at Madison Consolidated High School. Tim has always had his heart in the Madison community.

During the past administration term Mayor Al Huntington was a big push for this project. From day one Al showed his support with committing the City of Madison to this project.

Major compliments to date:

1. Signing application for TE grant we received in 2002.
2. Securing money for TE grant match.
3. Providing Park department service's for maintaining trail clearing.
4. Providing services through the City Street department to remove tons of trash and clearing of the riverfront section.
5. Promoting our trail through local tourism.
6. Plus many other contributions too numerous to count.

Heritage Trail committee will be meeting with Tim to update on our trail progress. All committee members feel very good about Tim's supporting the Heritage Trails continuation.
The new Parks department director Pee Wee Lakeman will be also be introduced to the Heritage Trail project. Pee Wee is replacing Dave Munier who has been the other mastermind behind the trails progress.
